BONSAI CLASSES

2 classes/week– $70.00

1 class/week – $55.00

Ages 3-5

We focus on building self-confidence, improving motor and coordination skills, and having fun.

In the class we teach basic karate skills, like blocks, kicks, punches, and stances. We talk about using words to solve problems, and getting an adult or older child’s attention if we feel uncomfortable with a situation. We play games, that encourage team work and improve coordination. Students will learn some basic Japanese language, including counting, start/stop, colours, names of techniques, and more.

Bonsai Students start out with a white belt and progress through 4 coloured stripes (yellow, orange, green, blue), Before continuing through the coloured belts.

YOUTH CLASSES

All Access unlimited classes/week – $120.00

2 classes/week – $90.00

1 class/week – $75.00

Youth Ages 6-10 Teen Ages 10-15

We focus on empowerment, fitness, building self-confidence, increasing motor and coordination skills, and having fun!

In the class we teach Karate Kihon(Basics), Kata(Forms), Kumite (Sparring), Self Defense, and Assertiveness. Students begin to gain an in-depth understanding of Shukokai concepts and the responsibilities that come with studying a fighting art. We talk about Bullying, Anger Management, Personal Boundaries, and Street Safety. We do activities that increase karate skills, encourage team work, fair play, and improve fitness. Students will learn some basic Japanese language, including counting, start/stop, colours, names of techniques, and more.

Youth and Teen Students start out with a white belt and progress through the colour belts (Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown first, second, third), and then onto Junior Black Belt (once they are 16, students can gain a full adult Black belt)

ADULT CLASSES

All Access unlimited classes/week – $120.00

2 classes/week – $100.00

1 class/week – $85.00

Ages 16+

We focus on fitness, self-defense, building self awareness and increasing coordination skills.

In the class we teach Karate Kihon (Basics), Kata (Forms), Kumite (Sparring), Self Defense, and Assertiveness. Students further explore and integrate Shukokai concepts and must fully understand the responsibilities that come with studying a fighting art. We do activities that increase karate skills, encourage questions and improve fitness. Lessons can include information on Japanese culture, history, and language.

Adult Students start out with a white belt and progress through the colour belts, then onto the Black belt.

FAMILY RATES

Family All Access unlimited classes/week – $250.00

2 classes/week – $205.00

1 class/week – $175.00

All ages - Bring the whole family

Our family rates allow the whole family to train at discounted rate. 

Drop in Fee: $20.00 for Youth & Adults, maximum 2 drop in classes/month

Karate BC Fee: depends on belt colour –approx $35.00 youth, $55.00 adult, $70 black belts. Payable after 2 classes for insurance purposes directly to Karate BC.

Kimura Shukokai International Fee: $25.00 payable in January

Private Classes and Gift Certificates are available.

Instructors

Instructor: Sensei Rob Walker

Sensei Rob is the Chief Instructor for the Westshore Dojo. He currently holds Yondan (4th Dan Black Belt) and has been training in Kimura Shukokai under Country Chief Instructor Sensei David Bentley since 2004. In addition to Shukokai Karate, Sensei Rob trained in a wide variety of martial arts for over 40 years.

Sensei Rob is a trained National Coaching Certification Program coach and instructor, a trained Fit4Defense instructor and was a tournament competitor for 10 years, including competing in 5 Kimura Shukokai International World Championships.

Sensei Rob’s approach to self-defence is influenced by his 17 years as a Federal Peace Officer and his interest in traditional kata applications. Sensei Rob is a past president of Karate BC, Chief Referee for Kimura Shukokai – Canada West, an international-level referee under Kimura Shukokai International, a member of the Karate BC Officials Committee and a national-level karate referee under Karate Canada. 

Instructor: Sensei Sarah Kooijman

Sensei Sarah started in Shukokai karate in 2004 and achieved her Nidan in 2012. She began competing in 2005, has won numerous medals at a provincial level.

Her competitive highlights included competing at the 2006 BC Winter Games, winning several medals at Karate BC Provincial Championships and representing Canada at the KSI World Karate Championships from 2006 to 2010.

She is currently on a maternity leave from teaching evening classes but can be found in the dojo on weekends and for special events. She is a KSI Canada West Level B Referee and a Karate BC Provincial Judge. In addition she is a certified Fit4Defence Instructor and National Coaching Certification Program coach.

Instructor: Sempai Rose Walker

Sempai Rose is an Instructor at the Westshore Dojo. She currently holds Nidan (2nd Dan Black Belt) and has been training in Kimura Shukokai under Country Chief Instructor Sensei David Bentley since 2005.

Rose worked in education and outdoor recreation for many years, specializing in populations with a variety of challenges and barriers to participation. She has trained in several other martial arts since the 1980s.

Rose is a trained National Coaching Certification Program coach and instructor, a trained Fit4Defense instructor and a Westshore Competition Coach. She is a past tournament athlete who has competed provincially and internationally in Kimura Shukokai.
